Iron Mountain Guides Clients through Complexities of European (.EU) Domain Names

Accredited .EU Registrar Publishes White Paper; Recommends Strategic Approach

September 12, 2005

BOSTON - Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM) today announced that its Intellectual Property Management business unit has been accredited by EURid to register .EU domain names. The initiative for the creation of a .EU top level domain (TLD) came from the European Commission and is intended to unite European Community countries with their own domain name extension. Only companies, organizations and individuals based within the European Community are allowed to register for a .EU extension.

The registry expects to make available the terms and conditions of registration in official EU languages – including alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provisions, by the end of September of 2005. The “sunrise period” is tentatively scheduled to begin in October 2005 and general live registration could start in February 2006.

Iron Mountain is available to consult with corporations about their domain name registration and management strategies.Iron Mountain’s domain name client roster includes some of the world’s largest companies that outsource their domain name records management functions. Iron Mountain’s best practice strategies involve taking an inventory of current domain names, organizing the domain name portfolio, and developing clear-cut strategies for extending brand protection through domain names.

In the current resurgent marketplace for domain names, Iron Mountain cautions companies about unscrupulous, non-accredited vendors.Companies interested in a .EU domain name should know: .EU domain names must be requested through an accredited .EU registrar, such as Iron Mountain. A list of as accredited registrars is available on the EURid website at www.eurid.eu. Pre-registration is not a guarantee that you will get a requested .EU domain name. The EURid registry states that if you do not have prior rights, you should be aware that the name could be registered to a party with prior rights to that name during the sunrise period and that pre-registration does not guarantee that you will get a particular name. Credit card information should not necessarily be required to pre-register a .EU domain name. These offers can be scams from non-accredited vendors.

Iron Mountain has published a white paper entitled “Understanding .EU (European Union) Domain Name Pre-Registration.”It can be downloaded free of charge at www.ironmountain.com/ipm in the “Spotlight” section. This paper is based on research conducted by two of Iron Mountain’s resident senior domain name experts with more than sixteen years of combined experience in the domain name records management industry. They have examined various .EU pre-registration offers and provide guidance on how companies can avoid trouble and unnecessary stress when planning their own approach to safeguarding intellectual property in this new internet top-level domain. The paper examines and discusses:

• Detecting fraudulent pre-registration offers
• Understanding legitimate pre-registration offers
• Questions to ask a. EU registration vendor about EURid
• .EU sunrise period basics
• The bottom line

Iron Mountain works with large corporate clients that typically have between 50 and 15,000 domain names in their inventory. As these companies increasingly tie their trademarks – and their companies’ future – to the global capabilities of the Internet, management and protection of associated domain name records becomes a critical task. With the new .EU domain name extension, Iron Mountain can help guide its clients through the process of appropriately adding .EU domains to their domain name portfolio.
